Trump’s address to Congress tonight was powerful and well taken by Congress. Even Democrats were moved…
As Reported by the Blaze:
President Trump’s first speech to a joint session of Congress had a lot that angered Democrats, but there was at least one powerful moment that left everyone stunned, including his critics.
President Trump recognized the sacrifice of Carryn Owens, the widow of the Navy SEAL that was killed during the Yemen raid weeks into his presidency. The applause was the longest of the entire night and thundered through the chamber.
“We are joined tonight by Carryn Owens,” Trump said, “the widow of U.S. Navy Special Operator Senior Chief William Ryan Owens. Ryan died as he lived a warrior and a hero, battling against terrorism and securing our nation.”
The Congress applauded for a long time in her honor.
“I just spoke to our great General Mattis just now,” Trump continued, “who reconfirmed that, and I quote, ‘Ryan was a part of a highly successful raid that generated large amounts of vital intelligence that will lead to many more victories in the future against our enemy.’ Ryan’s legacy is etched into eternity.”
Then he thanked Carryn Owens, who then received the longest sustained applause of the night in a very powerful moment of national gratefulness for the sacrifice made for our security.
The raid in Yemen has been a very contentious issue as the administration continues to assert that it was well-timed, well-ordered, and although it resulted in the death of a member of the military, it was successful. Critics have used leaks to question whether it was necessary and if it had a political motivation, given that it was ordered weeks after his inauguration, into a country named in his travel ban just days after he ordered the ban.
Owens’ father has also come out publicly to demand that an investigation is made into the circumstances that led to the death of his Navy SEAL son.
