President Trump has been getting a lot done during his first week in office. While he works with Congress to get started on some of the cornerstones of his agenda, he’s also been using his executive authority to move other issues along that don’t require legislation.
As Reported by Allen West:
Most of the executive orders President Trump has signed so far are the start of fulfilling the promises he made during his campaign, and the executive order he plans to sign today is no different.
President Trump appears to be following through with at least one major campaign promise. According to Reuters, “U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to sign several executive orders on Wednesday restricting immigration from Syria and six other Middle Eastern or African countries, according to several congressional aides and immigration experts briefed on the matter.” The executive order would effectively terminate the controversial Syrian refugee program implemented by the Obama administration.
“Another order will block visas from being issued to Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen, said the aides and experts, who asked not to be identified,” adds Reuters.
The White House’s new policy on refugees is set to impose a “multi-month ban” on hostile Muslim-majority countries until administration officials can properly identify and vet all incoming migrants. CNS News reported in November, “The Obama administration has resettled 13,210 Syrian refugees into the United States since the beginning of 2016 – an increase of 675 percent over the same 10-month period in 2015.”
Of course, Trump’s campaign promise to ban immigration from Muslim-majority countries was one of his most controversial proposals. Immediately after proposing the plan for “extreme vetting,” Trump faced an intense backlash from liberals and the media. However, as was usually the case during the 2016 campaign, the accusations levied against him were baseless.
What nobody in the media seemed to consider was how reasonable the proposal was. At this time, the United States lets in thousands of immigrants and refugees with no proper way of vetting whether they have ties to terrorism. Despite the fact that Europe is dealing with a refugee and terrorism crisis, liberals want America to repeat the same mistakes. What is worth noting is that the order does not permanently ban immigration from these countries, but only puts a temporary halt on it until a better system can be put in place. It is perfectly reasonable for a country to want to be sure about who is entering its borders from places known to be hostile to its values and people. Putting a temporary halt on immigration from these places will ensure we are being smart about who we are letting in.
Instead of engaging Trump in an honest debate on the merits of the policy, liberals accused him of being a bigot. Despite the intense criticism, President Trump appears to stand by his plan. Whatever the reaction, Trump is seems committed to his promise to keep Americans safe.
