During a routine campaign speech in North Carolina, Mr Trump had been discussing the cost of US intervention in the Middle East when he appeared to accuse US troops of stealing money meant for the post-war reconstruction of Iraq’s infrastructure.
He said: “Iraq. Crooked as hell. How about bringing baskets of money, millions and millions of dollars, and handing it out?
“I want to know who are the soldiers that had that job because I think they’re living very well right now, whoever they may be.
“Think of it, the money that went out.”
